Defence Lawyers Step Down In American Singer D4vd’s Capital Murder Trial

Legal representatives for American singer David Anthony Burke, popularly known as D4vd, have formally withdrawn from his defence in an ongoing first-degree murder trial in Los Angeles, California.

Following the departure of his private defence team, the court assigned the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office to take over the 21-year-old musician’s case.

The singer was arrested in Hollywood on April 16, 2026, and is being held without bail over the murder of Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

He faces charges of first-degree murder with special circumstances, alongside counts of lewd acts with a minor and mutilation of a body.

Burke has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During preliminary proceedings, state prosecutors alleged that Burke stabbed the victim multiple times in his home.

Prosecutors further presented evidence showing that the defendant used a fake identity to purchase equipment online, including two chainsaws, an inflatable pool, a body bag, and a shovel, to dispose of the body.

The initial defence team comprising high-profile attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter requested permission to step down, which was granted by the court.

In a joint statement, the attorneys expressed confidence in the Public Defender’s Office to handle the defense.

Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel confirmed the office had assumed representation, stating that Burke remains entitled to a thorough defence and a critical review of all evidence.

Due to the special circumstances attached to the murder charges, including allegations of financial gain, Burke faces a potential death sentence if convicted.
