Kano Govt Sets Up 20-Man Panel To Review Varsity Workers’ Pay

The Kano State Government has constituted a 20-member technical committee to review the implementation of the newly approved remuneration package for academic staff of state-owned tertiary institutions.

The committee, inaugurated by the Head of Civil Service, Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, was constituted following requests from academic staff over the implementation of the remuneration package recently approved by the Federal Government.

Maimota said the committee was established on the directive of Governor Abba Yusuf to critically examine the requests and advise the government on the way forward.

She urged members to carry out the assignment with diligence, objectivity and a high sense of responsibility, stressing that their report would guide the government in taking an informed decision in line with existing guidelines.

According to her, the committee is expected to collate and review memoranda and supporting documents submitted by affected institutions, as well as examine relevant Federal Government approvals, circulars and policies governing the remuneration package.

It will also determine the applicability of the package to various categories of academic staff, identify disparities in grade levels and job classifications, and compare existing remuneration structures with the newly approved Federal Government package.

The committee is further mandated to assess the financial implications of implementation, including recurrent personnel costs and the impact on the state’s wage bill and budget.

It will also recommend possible implementation options, including effective dates, phased implementation, funding arrangements and transitional measures to reduce fiscal pressures.

The committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, while the Commissioners for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, and Finance, Ismail Dambazawa, are members.
Other members include the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Baffa Sani Gaya;

Chairman, State Payroll Standing Committee, Auwalu Umar Sanda; Accountant-General of the state, Jamila Magaji Abdullahi; and heads of state-owned tertiary institutions.

The Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Office of the Head of Civil Service, Abba Adamu Danguguwa, is the secretary of the committee.

The committee has three weeks from the date of inauguration to complete its assignment and submit its report to the Head of Civil Service for onward transmission to the governor.
