Metering Rate Hits 61.51% as DisCos Record 203,521 New Installations In June—NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that the national electricity metering rate rose to 61.51 per cent by the end of June 2026, up from 60.22 per cent in May, as distribution companies (DisCos) accelerated meter deployment across the country.

According to NERC’s latest Metering Status of Distribution Companies Factsheet for May and June 2026

National metering rate: 61.51 per cent in June 2026, compared with 60.22 per cent in May 2026.

Total active customers: 12,589,486 as of June 2026.

Total metered customers: 7,743,839, leaving roughly 4.85 million customers still unmetered.

New meters in June: 203,521 additional customers were metered in June, almost double the 104,585 recorded in May.

The regulator said the data reflects “continued progress in customer metering across the country” as DisCos work to close the metering gap and reduce reliance on estimated billing.

The Factsheet showed that three distribution companies continued to lead the sector in metering coverage as of June 2026:

Eko Electricity Distribution Company: 88.70 per cent metering rate.

Ikeja Electric: 87.91 per cent metering rate.

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company: 81.38 per cent metering rate.

These figures are broadly consistent with earlier 2026 data, which showed Eko and Ikeja consistently above 87–88% and Abuja above 80 per cent while several northern DisCos lagged below 40 per cent.

Recall that NERC’s previous factsheets for January–April 2026 showed the national metering rate climbing from 57.93 per cent in January to 59.69 per cent in April, with more than 7.44 million customers metered by then. The June update indicates that momentum has been maintained into the second quarter, with the steepest single-month increase in new meter installations so far this year recorded in June.

Metering has been a central focus of NERC’s regulatory agenda under the Electricity Act 2023, with the commission linking improved metering to reduced technical and commercial losses, better revenue collection and fairer billing for consumers.
