The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the men’s national team, reversing the 73-year-old’s apparent departure announced on social media following the team’s World Cup exit.
Queiroz, who previously served twice as an assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, initially took charge of the Black Stars in April. He led the side to the last 32 of this year’s FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Shortly after that loss, the Portuguese coach indicated on social media that he was leaving his post, but the GFA confirmed that internal discussions led to a decision to re-engage him for another spell.
Although the association has not disclosed the length of his new contract, it stated in an official release that Queiroz will be responsible for preparing the team for “a successful new phase on the international stage.” The GFA cited his “extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars” as positioning him strongly to lead the squad into this next chapter.
Queiroz brings a wealth of international managerial experience to the role, having previously led Iran, Portugal, and Egypt at major tournaments. He has also held head-coaching positions with South Africa, Colombia, and Qatar.
The GFA added that further details regarding his mandate will be announced in due course. Queiroz’s second spell will officially commence with Ghana’s qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which begin later this month.
The Black Stars are drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia, and Somalia, though the specific dates and venues for their first two fixtures have yet to be confirmed by the federation.
