NAAPE, NDLEA Strengthen Partnership Against Drug Trafficking In Aviation Sector

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has pledged closer collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to prevent illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The association made the commitment when its president, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the chairman and chief executive officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (rtd.), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting focused on strengthening the role of aviation professionals in detecting and preventing drug trafficking, while promoting professional integrity and safety across the sector.

Gindeh said the fight against illicit drugs was increasingly linked to aviation safety and national security, given the critical roles played by pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers.

He said aviation professionals were strategically positioned to identify suspicious activities, behavioural changes and other warning signs that could indicate attempts by criminal networks to exploit the aviation system.

“Fighting illicit drugs and protecting aviation safety are now the same fight. They meet at our airports, our cockpits, our hangars, and in the lives of the young Nigerians we both serve,” Gindeh said.

He added that airports remained vulnerable points for international drug trafficking and warned that compromising an aviation professional could have consequences beyond the commission of a criminal offence.

According to him, NAAPE would not remain a spectator in the anti-drug campaign, stressing that its members had a responsibility to promote integrity, fitness for duty and a culture where legitimate concerns could be reported before they developed into serious security threats.

To strengthen the partnership, NAAPE proposed four major areas of collaboration, including joint awareness and integrity programmes for pilots, engineers and aviation students; confidential reporting channels between NAAPE branches and NDLEA commands; joint fitness-for-duty and substance-abuse prevention initiatives; and continuous professional education to improve the early identification of behavioural and security concerns.

Gindeh also commended the NDLEA leadership for intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and substance abuse, particularly the agency’s focus on dismantling trafficking networks, disrupting cartel finances and reducing demand for illicit drugs.

As part of the visit, the NAAPE leadership presented Marwa with an Award for Excellence in Leadership in recognition of his contribution to the fight against illicit drugs.

Responding, Marwa welcomed the proposed partnership, describing aviation professionals as important gatekeepers in the effort to prevent the movement of illicit drugs through Nigeria’s airports.

He said the aviation industry remained a critical gateway to Nigeria’s economy and international community, making it necessary to prevent criminal networks from exploiting legitimate aviation operations.

“Pilots and engineers hold immense public trust, and your willingness to serve as eyes and ears for intelligence sharing will bolster our operational efficiency at all international airports,” Marwa said.

The NDLEA chairman said partnerships with professional associations such as NAAPE would enable the agency to extend its prevention efforts beyond conventional enforcement operations to workplaces, training institutions and professional communities.

“Every responsible sector must contribute to prevention. We want to deepen partnerships that help us detect threats earlier, protect young Nigerians from substance abuse, and ensure that criminal networks do not exploit legitimate systems and professionals for their activities,” he said.
