Kogi East senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack and blockade of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.

Ameh described the incident as “ridiculous and unacceptable,” insisting that opposition politicians must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation, harassment or obstruction.

In a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Ameh condemned what he described as the reported roadblock and intimidation of Obi’s convoy, alleging that the individuals involved may have acted with the backing of persons in positions of power.

He maintained that no Nigerian should be subjected to threats, harassment or unnecessary obstruction while travelling on a public road.

“Our roads belong to the people, and political influence must never be used to create fear, inconvenience, or a sense of lawlessness,” Ameh said.

The NDC candidate argued that the reported action, if established, could amount to a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

Ameh cited Section 41(1), which guarantees freedom of movement, and Section 40, which provides for the right to peaceful assembly and association, including participation in political parties.

He called for a thorough investigation into allegations that individuals connected to the Benue State Government may have sponsored or encouraged the reported action.

“If these actions were indeed sponsored or encouraged by anyone connected to the state government, then that is deeply troubling and must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Ameh stressed that public office carries a responsibility to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law, rather than create an atmosphere of intimidation.

“Public office is a responsibility, not a licence to intimidate citizens or empower thugs,” he stated.

He urged the Benue State Government to publicly condemn the incident and ensure that Obi’s political activities in the state are conducted without further interference.

The senatorial candidate also called on relevant security authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable, regardless of political affiliation or connections.

“We must continue to speak up for peace, accountability, and the rule of law. Benue deserves leadership that protects its people, not actions that divide, intimidate, or humiliate them,” Ameh said.

The statement followed reports that Obi’s convoy was allegedly blocked along the Gboko Road in Benue State on Monday while he was attempting to enter the state.

Details surrounding the incident, including the identities and motives of those involved and whether anyone was injured, remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

Ameh reiterated that political differences should not be allowed to undermine citizens’ fundamental rights, urging political actors and security agencies to uphold peaceful political engagement and respect for the rule of law.
