Former West Ham Goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko Dies At 64

Former West Ham United and Czech international goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has died at the age of 64, five years after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The English Championship club confirmed his death on Monday, describing the former goalkeeper and coach as a club legend.

Miklosko joined West Ham from Banik Ostrava in 1990 and spent seven years with the London club, making nearly 400 appearances between 1990 and 1997.

During his time at West Ham, he played a key role in the club’s promotions to the English top flight in 1991 and 1993.

His performances and personality also endeared him to the club’s supporters, who continued to sing his name years after his departure.

After ending his playing career, Miklosko returned to West Ham in a coaching capacity, taking up the role of goalkeeping coach.

In December 2024, he revealed that he had chosen to discontinue further cancer treatment, telling Czech media that he wanted to “live a normal life”.

Confirming his death, West Ham said in a statement, “It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United announces the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Ludek Miklosko.”

The club added, “Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.”

Banik Ostrava also paid tribute to their former player, remembering him as an “outstanding goalkeeper and above all a great personality”.

West Ham said Miklosko would be remembered during Tuesday’s League Cup third-round match against Fulham, with the club planning a period of appreciation in his honour.

Miklosko’s son, Martin, said the family was devastated by his passing but found solace in the support shown to his father throughout his illness.

“We are heartbroken at his loss, but take huge comfort from the immense support he received from all of you, along with the knowledge that he is now at peace and no longer suffering.

“Dad simply loved West Ham United, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game. The club, and its fans, were and always will be a part of our family, so thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”

Miklosko began his international career with Czechoslovakia before later representing the Czech Republic.
