The political disagreement between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has moved beyond public exchanges over President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

While both sides publicly support Tinubu’s second-term ambition, their disagreement reflects deeper battles over political influence, party structures, succession plans and control of the ruling party’s electoral machinery ahead of the next general election.

1. Settling Old Political Scores, Especially Over The Fubara-Wike Feud

One of the biggest fault lines is Rivers State, where the political battle between Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara continues to shape alliances ahead of 2027.

Although Wike and Fubara have settled their differences, the cracks continue to linger.
The latest disagreement is framed around the Rainbow Coalition and Tinubu’s re-election, Rivers remains the backdrop to much of Wike’s political calculations. Wike has maintained a strong political structure in the state, while the crisis with Fubara has divided political stakeholders across party lines.

Political observers say the renewed confrontation with some APC governors cannot be separated from the unresolved Rivers political crisis, where control of the state’s political future remains fiercely contested.
For Wike, preserving his influence in Rivers is central to maintaining his national relevance.

2. Control Of Party Structures And Succession Politics

Another major point of disagreement is who controls party structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Across several APC-controlled states, governors serving their second terms are already positioning allies to succeed them. Control over state party executives, delegates, and campaign structures is expected to play a crucial role in determining gubernatorial candidates.
Wike has argued that support for President Tinubu should not automatically hand governors control over every election in their states. His position challenges governors who want the APC’s presidential campaign to strengthen their preferred successors and legislative candidates.The disagreement, therefore, extends beyond Tinubu’s candidacy to the battle over political succession at the state level.

3. Re-election Calculations For First-term Governors

For APC governors elected for the first time in 2023, 2027 is also about securing a second term.
Many of them see President Tinubu’s popularity and campaign machinery as an important advantage for their own re-election campaigns. Their argument is that the party should campaign with one unified message from the presidency down to the governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.

But Wike disagrees.He insists that governors should earn support based on their performance and local political realities, arguing that voters can support one party for the presidency and another for governorship or legislative elections.That difference has become one of the central arguments in the dispute.

4. Control Of Tinubu’s 2027 Electoral Machinery And Wike’s Political Survival

The Rainbow Coalition has also become a contest over who mobilises political support for President Tinubu.
Wike said the coalition is a cross-party political arrangement designed to attract supporters from different political parties for Tinubu’s re-election. He has maintained that it is separate from the APC’s official campaign structure and does not prevent participating parties from fielding candidates in other elections. The APC Governors’ Forum, however, said it will not support any political arrangement that could weaken APC candidates or create parallel campaign structures. Beyond campaign strategy, the disagreement is also about Wike’s political future. Remaining a key ally of Tinubu while retaining influence within the PDP gives Wike a unique position in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.

Wike is similarly working to preserve his national political influence through strategic alliances centred on Tinubu’s presidency, while maintaining his identity within the PDP.
