The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has constituted six committees to oversee preparations for the proposed PWDs Got Talent Reality TV Show 2026, an initiative aimed at providing a national platform for Persons with Disabilities to showcase their talents.
The committees were inaugurated on Thursday, September 17, at the Commission’s conference hall in Abuja. The Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Ayuba Burki Gufwan, was represented at the event by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Aliyu Agwai.
The programme is being developed in partnership with the Discovering Abilities in Disabilities Initiative (DADI), founded by Steve Rodstick Ezeh.
The six committees will focus on mobilisation, partnerships and sponsorship, media and publicity, branding and marketing, logistics and entertainment, as well as inclusion and compliance.
The mobilisation committee is expected to coordinate outreach across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory through disability organisations, community groups and other stakeholders. Other committees will handle areas including funding proposals, corporate and development partnerships, publicity, event logistics and accessibility.
The inclusion and compliance committee will be responsible for accessibility measures such as sign-language interpretation, audio description and disability-sensitive content.
Representing the Executive Secretary, Agwai said the Commission viewed the project as part of efforts to shift public perceptions of disability towards greater recognition of the abilities and talents of Persons with Disabilities.
“Some time ago, we conceived an idea — to change the narrative from sympathy to ability, from charity to talent and empowerment,” Gufwan said in remarks delivered on his behalf.
The organisers said the show is expected to be supported by an N1 billion Ability Talent Fund, intended to provide rewards and support for enterprise and career development among participants. Details on the fund’s financing and administration were not provided at the event.
Ezeh, who initiated the reality show, said the project was conceived as an avenue to create opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria’s creative sector.
He said the initiative was intended to move the conversation around disability beyond welfare and towards participation and economic empowerment.
According to Ezeh, the programme could also contribute to awareness and implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, particularly by promoting greater participation of PWDs in public and creative spaces.
The organisers did not, at the inauguration, provide detailed information on the proposed audition process, broadcast platform, production schedule, selection criteria or the precise structure of the N1 billion fund.
The NCPWD called on government institutions, businesses, development organisations and media outlets to support the initiative as preparations continue for the 2026 programme.
