Falconets Crash Out Of U-20 World Cup After Late Colombia Heartbreak

Nigeria’s Falconets were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Sunday after a stoppage-time goal handed Colombia a narrow 1-0 victory in their quarter-final clash in Łódź.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign despite a spirited performance in which the Falconets created several opportunities but failed to find the decisive finish.

Both sides struggled to break the deadlock in an action-packed first half, with Nigeria showing greater attacking intent and creating dangerous situations from set-pieces.

Tumininu Adeshina and Kafayat Mafisere delivered several threatening corners, while Janet Akekoromowei, Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu and Onyedikachi Ekezie all came close to putting Nigeria ahead.

Akekoromowei came closest in the 19th minute when the Portugal-based forward struck the crossbar with a precise effort from the edge of the box.

Adeshina then tested Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo in the 38th minute, forcing her into an excellent save to tip the defender’s powerful effort over the bar.

Nigeria continued to press after the interval but struggled to turn their dominance into a goal as Colombia defended resolutely and looked to threaten on the counter-attack through Valerin Loboa and Mariana Silva.

Coach Moses Aduku responded by introducing Winner Onajite David for Queen Joseph and Precious Oscar for Nkwocha as he sought to add fresh impetus to the attack.

The game took a decisive turn in the 77th minute when Nigeria were reduced to 10 players after Mafisere was shown a straight red card for a foul on Samantha Rodriguez.

Despite being a player down, the Falconets continued to search for the breakthrough, but Colombia’s disciplined defending and game management kept Nigeria at bay.

The decisive moment came in the second minute of stoppage time.

Loboa raced on to a through ball and saw her initial effort blocked by Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma. The Colombian forward, however, reacted quickly to the rebound and tucked the ball into the net to send her side into the semi-finals.

The narrow defeat drew praise from NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, who told the players they had done themselves and the country proud.

“You gave your best out there, and the NFF and every Nigerian watching saw that you held nothing back,” Ikpeme said.

“You did not take the Colombians for granted and you certainly did not play with any form of complex.

“It is a game you could have won easily if you had been able to convert some of the numerous chances that you created, but that is sport. Please don’t be disoriented by the result.”

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Chioma Ohakim, also consoled the players and officials in the dressing room at Stadion ŁKS Miejski.

“The result was unfortunate because you played your hearts out,” she said.

“Everyone who saw the match can testify to your determination and desire to make it to the semi-finals. Nigerians in Poland are very proud of your efforts.”
