Abia State government will commence larvae source management activities before the end of this month with focus on Isuikwuato and Aba South local government areas aimed at checking the spread of malaria in the state.
The state’s commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, stated this while briefing the press on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the capital.
Kanu explained that the novel intervention would be a collaboration between the State Ministry of Health and the National Malaria Elimination Programme.
“The intervention is based on available data indicating that the two local government areas have significant mosquito larvae breeding activities, hence the need to eliminate the larvae at source,” he said.
He also announced the commencement of a statewide distribution of insecticide treated mosquito nets within the first and second week of next month as part of measures to strengthen malaria prevention and control.
On diphtheria prevention and control, he said the Health Ministry’s advisory for this week focuses on strengthening preparedness and preventive measures against the disease, following reports of outbreaks in some parts of the country.
‎Kanu, who noted that the state has recorded no case of the disease added that the State Public Health Department had instituted an outbreak prevention and preparedness plan.
‎The commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, and the special adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity , Ferdinand Ekeoma, were present at the press briefing.
