The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will launch a National Savings Scheme designed to deepen financial inclusion and encourage Nigerians across income groups to save and invest for the future.
The scheme, which will offer tax incentives to participants, will be unveiled at the 2026 National Capital Market Conference scheduled for October 19, 2026 in Abuja.
The conference will also feature the launch of the Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan 2.0 (NCMMP 2.0), a 10-year strategy to guide the development of Nigeria’s capital market.
The SEC said the conference would focus on strategic initiatives to enhance domestic resource mobilisation, strengthen investor participation and support sustainable economic growth and national development.
Speaking on the conference, the director-general of SEC, Dr Emomotimi Agama explained that the Master Plan 2.0 is a critical document for measuring the growth and development of the market, adding that the endorsement of Vice-President Kashim Shettima would be vital to its implementation.
On the National Savings Scheme, Agama said it was principally an inclusion tool designed to provide Nigerians across income groups with opportunities to save and invest for the future.
“The National Savings Scheme is principally an inclusion tool: every Nigerian is given the opportunity to save, and those savings will be invested for the future,” Agama said.
He said tax incentives would be provided to encourage participation in the scheme, noting that it aligns with the federal government’s fiscal policy direction, including tax relief for citizens earning below a specified income threshold, which would leave them with more disposable income.
Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima will be Special Guest of Honour at the conference, while the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Professor Taiwo Oyedele, will serve as chief host.
Other activities lined up include the presentation of reports from the Capital Market Committee Technical Working Groups and the inauguration of the NCMMP 2.0 Project Steering Committee and the Capital Market Master Plan Implementation Committee.
The SEC said the conference is part of efforts to further develop the capital market and strengthen its contribution to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
