For the past year, the economic narrative pushed by the federal government has been anchored on a single, unyielding word: sacrifice.
The presidency has repeatedly looked struggling citizens in the eye, preaching that the removal of the petrol subsidy and the floating of the national currency were painful but unavoidable surgeries required to rescue a bleeding nation.
Under the weight of these policies, everyday life has become a relentless battle for survival. Fuel prices are stubbornly pushing toward N1,500 per litre, cooking gas has skyrocketed past N1,400 per kilogram, and basic food items have been completely priced out of the reach of the working class. We were told to tighten our belts, endure the harsh wilderness of these structural adjustments, and wait for a promised macroeconomic dawn.
However, the moral framework of this state-mandated austerity has been permanently shattered. In a deeply unsettling analysis titled “8.8 Trillion in the Dark: The IMF Has Written Tinubu’s Epitaph,” public commentator Aare Amerijoye B drew national attention to a staggering revelation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The global financial institution exposed that an astronomical N8.8 trillion in public funds was expended through completely unrecorded, off-budget channels. This means that while the formal state apparatus was tracking every kobo to justify its austerity narrative, billions of dollars were quietly flowing through parallel fiscal corridors completely hidden from public view.
To grasp the sheer scale of this institutional betrayal, one must look at what N8.8 trillion represents in real-world governance. This unrecorded sum could have comfortably funded the entire national healthcare budget, modernized our chronically collapsing national electricity grid, or provided massive agricultural subsidies directly to local farmers to permanently crash the cost of food. Instead, these resources were moved in total darkness. They bypassed the scrutiny of the National Assembly, evaded statutory financial auditors, and escaped any form of democratic accountability.
This is where the entire narrative of “economic reform” completely collapses into hypocrisy. True, patriotic economic reform does not mean squeezing the life out of the masses while allowing massive capital to leak through the back door of state institutions. A government cannot command its citizens to survive on empty stomachs while the ruling elite operates an unmonitored shadow economy. When off-budget spending matches or rivals formal development allocations, the official budget becomes nothing more than a cosmetic document designed to deceive international observers and local taxpayers.
Aare Amerijoye’s critique cuts straight to the bone. This shocking IMF disclosure serves as a definitive epitaph for an economic model built on selective suffering. It proves that the severe economic hardship afflicting Nigerian households is not the unfortunate, temporary side-effect of a well-calibrated economic restructuring. Rather, it is the direct consequence of systemic financial lawlessness and a lack of transparency at the highest levels of public admini
Public policy cannot be driven by double standards. A government that strips its people of economic predictability while hiding trillions in the shadows has forfeited the moral authority to ask for further patience. The Nigerian elite must understand that a nation cannot be built on the engineered hunger of its populace. If this administration wishes to salvage whatever remains of its credibility, it must immediately open its parallel accounts to independent forensic audit.
Until there is absolute transparency regarding where the ₦8.8 trillion went, any further sermon about national sacrifice is an insult to the collective intelligence of the Nigerian people.
