Giants of Africa, a non-profit organisation co-founded by Dallas Mavericks team president Masai Ujiri, has opened three basketball courts in Rwanda, extending its Built Within programme to all five provinces of the country.
The latest openings bring the organisation’s total to 53 courts across 16 African countries, taking it more than halfway towards its target of 100 courts across the continent.
The three courts were opened on consecutive days in partnership with Rwanda’s Ministry of Sports: Nyagatare in the Eastern Province on Tuesday, Musanze in the Northern Province on Wednesday, and Nyanza in the Southern Province on Thursday.
The facilities are expected to serve more than 9,500 young people, students and other community members.
The Nyagatare court, located near the University of Rwanda’s Nyagatare campus, is projected to serve more than 600 people, including university students and young people in the surrounding community.
In Musanze, the facility is situated at GS Marie Reine Rwaza, a Catholic boarding school with 900 students.
The court in Nyanza, located at Igihozo St Peter, has the largest projected catchment, with about 8,000 people expected to benefit from access to the facility, including students from the school and neighbouring institutions.
The Nyanza facility is the organisation’s 14th court in Rwanda, where its earlier projects included sites in Rusizi, Western Province, and Kigali.
Giants of Africa credited the Ministry of Sports and the Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) for their partnership in delivering the new facilities.
The organisation opened its 50th court at King’s College, Lagos, in May 2026, before adding the three Rwandan facilities.
With 14 of its 53 courts now located in Rwanda, the country accounts for more than a quarter of the organisation’s facilities across Africa.
The expansion also extends basketball infrastructure beyond Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, where much of the country’s basketball development has traditionally been concentrated.
Kigali has hosted Basketball Africa League matches at BK Arena, while Giants of Africa has staged its flagship festival in the city in recent years.
The new courts are expected to widen access to the sport in communities outside the capital, providing more young people with facilities to play basketball.
