The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), Abuja, and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the establishment of AAAU’s Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering and explore academic collaboration in Online Distance Learning (ODL).

The agreement was reached on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during a visit by the AAAU delegation to ABU, Zaria, following an earlier engagement between the two institutions in May.

The partnership is expected to deepen academic cooperation between the two universities, particularly in engineering education, postgraduate training, research and manpower development for Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace industry.

Speaking during the engagement, the acting vice-chancellor of AAAU, Dr. Mustapha Sheikh Abdullahi said the university was seeking the mentorship and technical expertise of ABU, particularly its Faculty of Engineering, to support the establishment and development of the specialised faculty.

He said the collaboration was important given the increasing demand for highly specialised manpower in Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace sector.

Abdullahi explained that ABU was a strategic partner because of its long-standing experience in engineering education and the depth of expertise available within its Faculty of Engineering.

He said AAAU was established with a specialised mandate to address the aviation and aerospace manpower gap in Nigeria and across Africa through teaching, research, innovation and industry collaboration.

The acting vice-chancellor said the proposed Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering represents a major component of the university’s long-term strategy to produce highly skilled professionals capable of supporting the country’s aviation, aerospace and emerging space industries.

Abdullahi said the institution was therefore seeking to leverage ABU’s decades of experience in engineering education, academic research and postgraduate training to ensure that the new faculty meets international standards.

He also disclosed that AAAU was exploring collaboration with ABU in Online Distance Learning, an area in which the Zaria-based university has considerable experience as one of the pioneering institutions in Nigeria.

According to him, the proposed ODL partnership would enable AAAU to expand access to aviation and aerospace education for international students and working aviation professionals who may be unable to participate in conventional full-time programmes because of their professional commitments.

He said the initiative would complement the university’s conventional academic programmes and broaden opportunities for continuous professional and postgraduate development within the aviation industry.

Responding, the vice-chancellor of ABU, Zaria, Prof. Adamu Ahmad welcomed the AAAU delegation and commended Dr. Abdullahi for taking up the challenge of pioneering a university dedicated specifically to aviation and aerospace education.

Prof. Ahmad assured AAAU of ABU’s commitment, particularly through its Faculty of Engineering, to supporting the university’s manpower development drive and the establishment of the Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering.

He said the partnership would provide an opportunity for the two institutions to share academic expertise and strengthen capacity in engineering and related disciplines.

The engagement culminated in the formal signing of the MoU by representatives of the two institutions.

The development comes as AAAU continues to expand its academic and professional training activities since its establishment by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to address the shortage of specialised aviation and aerospace manpower.

The university’s permanent-site groundbreaking and maiden matriculation were held on July 24, 2024, marking another major milestone in the development of the institution.

Beyond degree programmes, AAAU has been developing capacity in areas including aircraft and aerospace engineering, aviation management, airport operations, unmanned aerial vehicle systems, aviation law and finance, aviation medicine, logistics and meteorology.

The university’s leadership has consistently positioned the institution as an Africa-focused centre of excellence designed to support the continent’s aviation and aerospace development through education, research, innovation and stronger collaboration with industry and other academic institutions.

The new partnership with ABU is therefore expected to strengthen the academic foundation of the proposed Aeronautical and Space Engineering Faculty, expand postgraduate opportunities and contribute to the development of specialised manpower required for the growth of Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace sector.
