Morocco and Algeria are not only competing economically and regionally, but they are also scrambling for NNPCL’s financial commitment to build gas pipelines.

In June 2026, Algeria officially launched construction of its section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a 4,000 km project from Nigeria, Niger Republic, and Algeria, piping 30 bcm of Nigerian gas to Europe.

The project’s cost is about $10bn and could be built in as little as three years. Algeria’s gas reserves are second only to Nigeria’s in Africa.

And in July 2026, Nigeria signed an MoU with several ECOWAS countries on the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, 7,000 km long and running along the coast of 12 countries to Morocco, at a cost of $26bn.

Here’s the catch. Nigeria and Niger are not on the best of terms. Morocco and Algeria are at loggerheads. NNPCL needs $12.5bn for the AAGP and 10 years to build it.
