Nigeria’s Super Eagles face an early test in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations when they take on Guinea-Bissau in a crucial Group L Matchday 2 fixture on Tuesday.
Both teams opened their campaigns with victories. Nigeria came from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo, while Guinea-Bissau produced one of the opening round’s notable results by beating co-hosts Tanzania 2-0 away from home. Guinea-Bissau therefore lead the group on goal difference, with both sides on three points.
With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the finals as one of the three co-hosts, only the highest-ranked team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will qualify from Group L.
Here are seven reasons why victory in Tuesday’s encounter is important for Nigeria:
1. To take control of Group L
A victory would move Nigeria to six points from two matches and put the Super Eagles in a strong position at the top of the qualification race. Guinea-Bissau, currently ahead on goal difference, would remain on three points.
2. Guinea-Bissau are already showing their threat
The Wild Dogs demonstrated their potential by defeating Tanzania 2-0 in the opening round. Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé scored in the first and second halves respectively, giving Guinea-Bissau an impressive start to their campaign.
3. There is only one ticket available
Unlike most qualifying groups, Group L will produce only one qualifying team apart from automatic qualifiers Tanzania. CAF’s regulations stipulate that the highest-ranked non-host team in the group will advance to AFCON 2027.
That makes every point between Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar particularly significant.
4. Nigeria cannot afford to surrender the advantage gained in Uyo
The Super Eagles worked hard to overturn Madagascar’s early lead and secure a 2-1 victory through George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor.
A second successive victory would give Eric Chelle’s side six points from the opening two matches and maintain the momentum from their successful start.
5. A win would give Nigeria a head-to-head advantage
With Guinea-Bissau currently among Nigeria’s principal rivals for the single qualifying place, taking three points in Tuesday’s meeting would be significant in the overall group race.
It would also mean Nigeria have defeated one of their direct competitors in the first meeting between the two sides.
6. Goal difference could become decisive
The opening round has already demonstrated how important goal difference may become. Guinea-Bissau’s 2-0 victory over Tanzania left them with a +2 goal difference, while Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Madagascar gave them +1.
A convincing Nigerian victory would therefore not only deliver three points but potentially improve their position on goal difference.
7. It would provide breathing space before the next qualifying window
The next two group matches are scheduled for November, while the final two rounds will be played in March 2027.
Securing maximum points in Guinea-Bissau would give Nigeria a valuable cushion before the remaining four matches, rather than leaving the qualification battle to be settled in the final rounds.
The stakes are clear: Guinea-Bissau’s opening victory means Nigeria already have a direct rival in front of them, while Tanzania’s automatic qualification leaves just one available ticket for the other three teams. A victory on Tuesday would therefore represent more than another three points — it would put the Super Eagles in a stronger position in the race for the lone qualifying place.
