Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed what he told Cristiano Ronaldo after the veteran forward left the national team camp following the latest UEFA Nations League fixture.
Ronaldo, 41, reportedly departed the Portugal camp after the team’s Nations League match against Denmark amid claims of a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Reports from Spain suggested that tensions emerged after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s meeting with Norway, with Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre claiming that the incident affected the captain’s confidence.
Ronaldo subsequently held discussions with Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before leaving the camp, according to reports.
The Al-Nassr forward later said the public would eventually learn the reasons behind his decision.
Portugal responded to Ronaldo’s absence with an impressive 4-2 victory over Denmark, with Fernandes wearing the captain’s armband.
Fernandes has now revealed that he spoke directly with Ronaldo following his departure and stressed the forward’s enduring importance to the national team.
“I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country,” Fernandes said, according to Fabrizio Romano.
“Our national team is united, not divided. Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties.”
Portugal, who have won all three of their matches during the current international window, will face Norway in Porto in their next Nations League fixture on Sunday.
