How Driver Nearly Landed In Jail Over ‘Energy Drink’ Concealed With ‘Colos, Meth’  – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has cautioned commercial drivers and other transport workers against accepting parcels for delivery without first confirming their contents.

The warning followed an incident in which a commercial bus driver was nearly held responsible for illicit drugs concealed in a package he had accepted for delivery.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, issued the warning in a Sunday Facebook post alongside videos showing NDLEA operatives recovering illicit substances hidden inside an energy drink bottle.

Babafemi said the driver had collected a bottle of Fearless energy drink in Lagos as a waybill package destined for Ondo State.

According to him, the driver believed the package contained only the beverage until NDLEA operatives discovered that the bottle had been used to conceal Colos and methamphetamine.

“When they say don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s for a reason. A commercial bus driver spent some time in custody and would have ended in jail because he assumed a bottle of Fearless energy drink given to him as a waybill package in Lagos to deliver in Ondo State actually contained energy drink.

“However, as this video reveals, the energy drink bottle was used to conceal Colos and meth,” Babafemi wrote.

He explained that the NDLEA officers who discovered the drugs subsequently traced and arrested the person who handed the package to the driver.

According to the agency, the intervention prevented the driver from bearing sole responsibility for the illicit substances found in the package.

Babafemi warned that other drivers might not be as fortunate if the person who handed them a parcel could not be traced.

He urged commercial drivers, transport operators and members of the public to exercise caution when accepting packages for delivery.

“As drivers or whoever, please avoid taking parcels you don’t know the content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law and you go explain tire!” he wrote.

Babafemi stressed that being unaware of what a parcel contains may not necessarily protect a person from the legal consequences of possessing prohibited substances.
