Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has publicly disagreed with prominent Nigerian clergyman Pastor Paul Enenche following the preacher’s sermon criticizing African traditional worship.
During a recent church service, Pastor Enenche warned Christians against patronizing traditional priests, locally known as Babalawo. The cleric labeled African traditional religion a “dark practice” and argued that those who practice it should not expect God’s blessings. He also cautioned Christians against sending money to their home villages to support traditional festivals.
Reacting to the sermon, Edochie stated that the clergyman was misinforming the public, insisting that traditional African religious practices are not fetish.
Edochie emphasized that Christians and traditional worshippers pray to the same God through different paths, stressing that true traditional worship is distinct from harmful practices.
“Pastor, I disagree with you. You’re misinforming the people. Our traditional practices are not fetish. It’s the same God we worship in different ways,” Edochie stated.
He added that core traditionalists do not intentionally harm others, claiming that Africans face challenges today because they abandoned the traditional heritage that made them great in favor of Western ways.
