The Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT) has trained young scientists in advanced bioinformatics to strengthen research capacity and address emerging health challenges in Nigeria.

The chairman of the centre’s Board of Trustees, Prof. Aliyu Abdu, said training young scientists to conduct impactful research was one of the outfit’s mandates.

He explained that it would continue to provide innovative research outcomes to address existing and emerging health challenges in Kano State and beyond.

Abdu spoke at the opening of an Advanced Bioinformatics Workshop organised by the centre in Kano.

He said the centre has state-of-the-art facilities that enabled scientists to conduct advanced research locally.

He stated that researchers at the centre were working in several areas, including genomics, breast cancer, antimicrobial resistance and vaccine development.

Abdu also said the centre had established mutually beneficial partnerships with research institutions within and outside the region, with plans to expand its collaborations globally.

He urged the workshop participants to apply the knowledge acquired during the training to produce research outcomes that would benefit humanity.

The chairman commended the diversity of participants, particularly the gender representation, and thanked Pfizer Inc. and the Kano State Government for supporting the centre.

He also praised the board and management for the progress recorded in advancing scientific research.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Health Services and member of the Board of Trustees, Dr Ibrahim Musa Idris, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the centre.

Idris said the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf was pleased with the centre’s progress and expressed optimism that it would soon gain global recognition for developing innovative health solutions.

He urged the participants to maximise the training opportunity to improve their research skills and help address pressing health challenges.
