Cornell University in the United States has suspended parties and social events at fraternity houses for the remainder of the 2026–2027 academic year following public outcry over allegations of sexual assault involving a female student in 2024.
The university’s President, Michael Kotlikoff, announced the measure on Tuesday, October 13, as part of new measures aimed at strengthening campus safety, supporting survivors of sexual violence and reviewing fraternity life.

Under the directive, the university immediately suspended all parties and social events at houses affiliated with the university’s Interfraternity Council. Fraternities that violate the ban will face immediate emergency suspension.
In a statement to the university community, Kotlikoff said the restrictions would allow the institution to review fraternity activities and determine how they could continue safely.
The measures follow a lawsuit filed by a former student identified as Jane Doe, who alleged that seven men sexually assaulted her during a party at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. The allegations have triggered protests and criticism of the university’s handling of the case.
The university has also announced plans to involve New York State Police in investigating sexual assault cases on campus and strengthen support for students who report sexual misconduct.
Additional measures include increasing support for survivors and conducting an independent review of the university’s handling of sexual harassment and assault complaints.
The Chi Phi chapter involved in the allegations has been barred from campus following university disciplinary proceedings. However, the allegations have prompted renewed questions about accountability, fraternity culture and the effectiveness of existing safeguards.
The criminal investigation into the 2024 allegations has also drawn renewed attention, with New York authorities taking steps to review the case after a local prosecutor initially declined to pursue charges.
Cornell said the latest measures were intended to address concerns about campus safety and provide time for a broader assessment of fraternity activities.
The suspension will remain in effect until the end of the 2026–2027 academic year.
