What started as a Nigerian developer’s fun experiment has become a $10 million business story in barely a week.
Lagos Life, the viral browser game created by Nigerian software developer Shalom Rayhamen, launched on October 1, 2026. Eight days later, Vatar, the company behind the game, raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding at a reported $10 million valuation.
The funding round attracted some familiar names in Nigeria’s technology industry, including Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola, through Resilience17; tech entrepreneur Oo Nwoye; Terra Industries CEO Nathan Nwachuku; and Mono CEO Abdulhamid Hassan.
Lagos Life requires no app download. Players enter through a web browser, create characters and experience a digital version of everyday Nigerian life — getting jobs, earning virtual naira, paying rent, buying property and socialising.
Its familiar setting appears to be part of the attraction. Within its first three days, the game said it had crossed one million players. By October 9, its own figures put the number above five million, although these player figures have not been independently audited.
For Nigeria’s gaming industry, the speed of Lagos Life’s rise is significant. It shows how a simple, locally inspired idea can attract millions of users — and serious investor money — when technology meets a story people recognise.
