Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has assured President Bola Tinubu of 100 per cent support from the North for his re-election bid in 2027, citing a power-sharing understanding between northern and southern political leaders.
Yusuf gave the assurance at the unveiling of the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) National Headquarters in Abuja, where he urged northern political leaders and supporters to honour what he described as the longstanding agreement between the two regions.
The governor argued that the North had no reason to withdraw its support for Tinubu, noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari had served two consecutive terms with the backing of the South.
He said the understanding, which he traced to 1999, provided for the North to occupy the presidency for two consecutive terms before power returned to the South.
“Want to say that Arewa will support the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 100%. If I may recall, our leaders are here, our elders in politics are here. In 1999, there was a mutual agreement between the North and the South that the North would be allowed to go for two consecutive terms in office,” Yusuf said.
He added that Buhari’s eight years in office reflected the arrangement, arguing that the South had respected the understanding by allowing a northern candidate to serve two terms.
“And based on that, the last dispensation President Buhari, of blessed memory, held sway for two consecutive terms, meaning for eight years. The South had every opportunity to present a candidate or candidates, but because of this mutual agreement, especially with the support of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the North had that opportunity to govern Nigeria for two consecutive terms.
“For me, and for every right-thinking Nigerian, especially for us here in the North, we don’t have any reason, we don’t have any cause to now retreat on that promise.
“Even though not constitutionally, but I can say through constitution of common sense. Common sense dictates that we have to respect this mutual agreement.”
The governor subsequently pledged the support of northern states and what he described as patriotic Nigerians in the region for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
“I therefore, on behalf of all the Northern states, on behalf of all Democrats, on behalf of all patriotic Northern states individuals, we want to assure His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu of our full support, 100%,” he said.
Yusuf also praised Tinubu’s administration, saying the President had performed well, as outlined by the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He called on party members to openly mobilise support for Tinubu and his vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
“He has done exceedingly well as enumerated by our National Chairman. I therefore urge each and everyone to come out openly. Don’t be afraid.
“Afraid of what? We have all agreed we are members of the APC, and therefore we must work together to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Vice President emerge victorious come January 16, by the grace of Allah.”
The governor further urged party members to extend their support to members of the National Assembly, state governors and members of state Houses of Assembly.
He congratulated the organisers of the A4A headquarters unveiling and called for unity among party members ahead of the next general election.
