Prominent Bauchi Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr Ibrahim Adam Disina, has said a social media post he intended as a joke triggered reports alleging that an imam in Bauchi metropolis was removed for campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The reports, published by Daily Trust and BBC Hausa, identified the imam as Dahiru Abubakar of Madina Quarters, Bauchi.
In a letter addressed to the two media organisations, Disina described the report as false and questioned their verification processes and professionalism for publishing the claim as factual news.
“The story about the Imam being removed in Bauchi is a complete farce,” he said.
He added that residents of Bauchi and those familiar with the state’s political landscape would recognise the report as untrue.
“Residents of Bauchi and those who follow the state’s political landscape know that this story is nothing but a tall tale,” he said.
Disina expressed surprise that the two media organisations published the claim, arguing that their reputations should demand verification, professionalism and thorough investigation before stories are presented as facts.
“These are two media outlets that are supposed to be credible, from which one expects verification, professionalism and thorough investigation; yet, they fell into a trap set by social media,” he said.
The Islamic scholar also cited Islamic teachings on the need to treat religious matters seriously, stressing that media organisations should exercise caution when reporting claims involving religious leaders and communities.
He urged journalists and media organisations to verify information thoroughly before publication to prevent misinformation and protect public trust in the media.
