The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 120 megavolt-ampere (MVA) electricity transmission substation in Mashi local government area of Katsina State.
The completion of the project is scheduled for March 2027, as part of efforts to address persistent power shortages and improve electricity supply to communities in the state.
The minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkami Tegbe, disclosed this during the groundbreaking ceremony of the 2×60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation in Mashi, describing the project as a major investment in electricity infrastructure under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said the facility, when completed, would provide 120MVA transmission capacity, equivalent to approximately 96 megawatts, strengthening electricity delivery to Mashi and surrounding communities while creating opportunities for economic growth.
According to the minister, the project is expected to improve power supply to households, farmers, traders, artisans and small-scale businesses that have struggled with inadequate electricity and poor voltage over the years.
He explained that reliable electricity remained critical to agricultural productivity, industrial development, job creation and improved living standards, particularly in rural communities where businesses depend heavily on stable power supply.
“For our farmers, for our traders, for our artisans and families, the promise of development continues with this groundbreaking,” he said.
Tegbe commended President Tinubu for prioritising investment in the nation’s electricity infrastructure, stressing that the administration’s economic transformation agenda could only succeed with dependable power supply.
He disclosed that compensation issues associated with the project had been satisfactorily resolved, removing a major obstacle to its implementation.
The minister consequently directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), contractors and supervising engineers to ensure strict compliance with technical specifications, safety requirements and quality standards to meet the March 2027 completion deadline.
The minister also commissioned, 2×60MVA, 132/33KV power transmission substation, Kankia and also inspected the Katsina town GIS 132/33KV Transmission Substation.
He also commended Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, for his administration’s cooperation with the Federal Government in advancing electricity infrastructure and other development initiatives.
Adelabu described the governor as a committed partner in the Federal Government’s efforts to expand electricity access, noting that the state government had pledged further support for power sector projects.
Earlier, the managing director and chief executive officer of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project was designed to address longstanding electricity supply challenges confronting Mashi and neighbouring communities.
Abdulaziz explained that the substation would be equipped with two 60MVA power transformers, providing a combined transmission capacity of 120MVA and creating additional capacity to accommodate future electricity demand.
He said the facility would also include protection and control panels, civil infrastructure and other equipment necessary for efficient transmission operations.
According to him, the substation would strengthen bulk electricity supply to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), thereby improving voltage performance and supporting more reliable electricity distribution across the benefiting communities.
