The Imo State House of Assembly has unanimously approved the proposed alteration to the 1999 Constitution to provide for the establishment of state police services and related matters.

The resolution followed a motion moved by the majority leader, Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, representing Owerri West constituency.

Moving the motion, Onyemaechi stressed that the National Assembly had transmitted the bill to the state legislature for consideration and approval, in line with constitutional provisions.

Hon. Onyemaechi stressed that the House would be discharging its statutory responsibility by considering the proposed amendment and taking a position on same.

He highlighted that insecurity remained a major challenge requiring urgent action and called on members of the Assembly to approve the constitutional alteration.

He argued that the establishment of state police would help address security challenges confronting the the country.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Owerri Municipal, Hon. Clinton Amadi, described the proposal as a welcome development.

According to him, this would assist in tackling banditry, kidnapping and other security issues.

He stressed that Nigerians had suffered greatly from insecurity, adding that the proposed amendment offered an opportunity to strengthen the nation’s security architecture

In his contribution, Gilbert Nwosu highlighted that state police would provide a more effective approach to combating insecurity across the country.

The Chief Whip, Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, representing Oru East, stated that the proposed security arrangement could also create employment opportunities for youths while promoting peace and national cohesion.

Consequent upon a unanimous vote in favour of the motion, the speaker, Hon. Chike Olemgbe, representing Ihitte Uboma, ruled in favour of the resolution. The House subsequently adjourned until November 10 for next plenary.
