Political campaigns in Delta State yesterday took a dangerous dimension, especially between the ruling All Progressive Congress, (APC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party.
Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, again threatened election riggers ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying those involved could face deadly consequences.
Omo-Agege, who is seeking to represent Delta Central Senatorial District under the NDC, made the remarks at a political event in his constituency.
“I want to make the news again. Anybody who rigs the election on that day, we will kill him! If you don’t value your life, come and rig the election,” he said.
“They’re rigging your future. They’re rigging the future of your children. We’re waiting for them. Let them try it. It is rig and die. We’re going to give them aura for aura. There’s no court this time. We’re going to fight.”
Before now, there was a violent and unprovoked attack on the peaceful One Million-Man March organised by the Delta State Chapter of the NDC in Uvwie local government area.
The march, led by NDC governorship candidate, Chris Iyovwaye, was a peaceful and lawful expression of political support. Thousands of enthusiastic Deltans came out to participate.
Omo-Agege in a statement, condemned the violence in strong term, warning that the “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori must also take responsibility. As Chief Security Officer of Delta State, he cannot look away when citizens are attacked
while exercising their democratic rights. The buck stops at his table”
“The NDC will not be intimidated. We remain committed to peaceful and issue-based campaigns and will continue to engage the people of Delta State openly and peacefully.
“You may attack our people, but you cannot silence their voices. You may try to intimidate them, but you cannot take away their democratic rights. The people have the right to choose, and that right must be protected.” he warned.
However, the Delta state government dismissed the alleged assassination claims of former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, accusing him of resorting to mudslinging against Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to attract “cheap media” attention ahead of the 2027 elections.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), Mr Charles Aniagwu, responded to the claims by Omo-Agege saying Omo-Agege’s decision to make allegations against the governor, rather than unveil his agenda and manifesto to the people of Delta Central Senatorial District, was an indication that he lacked a compelling campaign message.
Omo-Agege resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a letter dated May 22 and addressed to the chairman of the party’s Orogun ward 2 in Ughelli north LGA of Delta state.
In a statement, the former deputy senate president said his decision followed weeks of consultations with political associates, supporters and stakeholders across the country.
Omo-Agege’s threat comes about a week after President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
