President Bola Tinubu is expected in Kaduna State this Saturday for the official flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 general election.
Thousands of supporters have gathered at the venue, alongside ministers, governors and other party leaders, as musicians entertain guests ahead of the President’s arrival.
Beyond the fanfare, the rally holds political significance for Tinubu, Governor Uba Sani and the APC’s re-election strategy.
Here are eight reasons why the rally matters.
1. It Sets the Tone for the 2027 Campaign
As the APC begins its nationwide mobilisation, the Kaduna rally provides an early indication of its campaign priorities and organisational capacity. The party will need to turn its political structures into sustained voter engagement and address concerns that extend beyond campaign day.
2. Kaduna Is a Political Powerhouse in the North
Kaduna is a major political hub in Northern Nigeria, with a diverse population and considerable influence in the region’s political calculations. Its choice as the campaign launch venue signals the APC’s intention to strengthen its northern support base.
3. The North’s Votes Could Be Crucial to Tinubu’s Re-election
Nigeria’s three northern geopolitical zones account for 56.01 million of the country’s 103.43 million registered voters, representing 54.2 per cent of the national total, according to INEC figures .
This makes Northern Nigeria a major electoral battleground, although registered voters do not automatically translate into votes cast.
- Tinubu Needs to Strengthen His Position in Kaduna
Tinubu lost Kaduna State to Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election. Starting his 2027 campaign there gives the APC an opportunity to pursue broader support in a state that did not deliver a majority for him in the last election.
- It Tests the APC’s Northern Political Alliance
The rally offers the APC an opportunity to demonstrate unity among northern governors, political leaders and grassroots organisations. Whether that elite mobilisation translates into voter support will be a key question ahead of 2027.
5. Tinubu’s Relationship With Uba Sani Comes Into Focus
Kaduna Governor Uba Sani is an important figure in the campaign, particularly given his role in the APC’s national outreach structure. The rally highlights the relationship between the Presidency and the state government as both seek to consolidate their political influence.
6. It Provides a Platform to Present the Administration’s Record
Infrastructure projects, including the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway and the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano gas pipeline, alongside investments in healthcare and education, offer the APC examples to present to voters. Their progress and actual benefits will remain important measures of delivery.
