Katsina United scored twice in the closing stages to rescue a 2-2 draw against Plateau United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 10 encounter at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts looked destined for defeat after conceding twice, but goals from Yushau Armiyau and U. M. Rabiu in the final 10 minutes ensured they salvaged a point in front of their home supporters.
Plateau United took the lead in the 30th minute through an own goal, leaving Katsina United trailing 1-0 at half-time despite their efforts to get back into the contest.
The visitors appeared to have secured all three points when Jibril Ibrahimi doubled their advantage in the 80th minute, putting Plateau United in a commanding position with only 10 minutes of normal time remaining.
However, Katsina United responded almost immediately, with Armiyau reducing the deficit in the 82nd minute to revive hopes of a comeback.
The hosts continued to press for an equaliser and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Rabiu struck in the 93rd minute to make it 2-2, sparking celebrations among the home fans.
The dramatic finish denied Plateau United victory after they had held a two-goal advantage late in the match, while Katsina United demonstrated resilience to avoid defeat.
The result means both sides shared the points in a fiercely contested North-West versus North-Central encounter as the NPFL season gathered momentum.
For Katsina United, the late rally will provide encouragement, although their defensive lapses will remain a concern after allowing Plateau United to establish a two-goal lead.
Plateau United, meanwhile, will rue their inability to protect their advantage, having conceded twice in the closing stages to leave Katsina with only a point from a match they had appeared poised to win.
