Kingibe Taps Into Tax Reforms Pains

It can be argued that the Nigerian Senate, or the entire National Assembly, is one big happy family. It is not just that they are a rubber stamp for the executive arm of government; within the legislative chambers, opposition doesn’t really exist.

It can be seen in the ease with which laws are passed, from the tax reform bills to the 2026 Electoral Act. That only changes when lawmakers are faced with defending their seats from outside the ruling party.

And a lot is going on in the economy for opposition lawmakers to focus on. Senator Ireti Kingine, an opposition lawmaker representing the FCT, chose one of the most contentious laws passed by the National Assembly to strike at the ruling party, its newly introduced tax laws.

Senator Kingibe’s warning that Nigeria’s new tax laws will compel citizens to surrender 25 per cent of their earnings to the government has ignited a debate extending beyond taxation.

The reality is that only the highest-income earners pay that level of personal tax, while the lowest-income earners are expected to pay between 0 and 18 per cent.

Regardless of accuracy, its rapid circulation reflects the declining public confidence in economic policies introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s government.

It also exposes how economic anxiety can amplify political messaging and become a handy weapon to turn voters against the ruling party.

During an election period, the factual basis of the senator’s assertion may prove secondary as she taps into the sentiments Nigerians generally feel about the new tax laws and economic reforms of the president’s administration.

Here is why her warning resonates. Nigerians are confronting the cumulative consequences of petrol subsidy removal, currency depreciation, rising living costs, and electricity tariffs.

Against this backdrop, taxation can appear less like an instrument of public finance and more like another demand on already strained household incomes.

Kingibe’s position as a senator gives her claims institutional visibility. Nevertheless, even a claim made for political ends can intensify perceptions of hardship.

Many Nigerians, small business owners, and manufacturers already distrust government assurances, while the tweaking of facts and interpretations can reinforce existing fears.

For the opposition, particularly the ADC to which Senator Kingibe belongs and is seeking reelection, these issues offer legitimate grounds for scrutinising the government.

Fuel subsidy removal, taxation, foreign borrowing, and monetary policy all deserve rigorous examination. The challenge is to connect them to verifiable evidence, measurable outcomes, and credible alternatives.

Ultimately, Kingibe’s intervention highlights both the opportunity and danger facing Nigeria’s opposition.

The decisive question is not whether Nigerians are angry. It is whether political leaders can translate that anger into informed debate about who bears economic costs, how government spends public resources, and what realistic alternatives exist.

Then there is an even bigger issue. The fact that many Nigerian voters don’t see the contradiction in the economic hardship they are going through, and their willingness to sell their votes to the same political party that has engineered their suffering.
