Amnesty International and the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have condemned the killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masusuka, in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, demanding a swift, transparent investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
Masusuka was reportedly killed on Monday by gunmen riding motorcycles as he stepped out of his house for his usual evening preaching.
Amnesty International described the killing as disturbing, urging Nigerian authorities to immediately and effectively investigate the incident and ensure that the suspected perpetrators are brought to justice.
The organisation, on its Facebook page, said the late cleric consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslims, while speaking against violent extremism and radicalisation.
It added that he had faced threats to his life and intimidation throughout his lifetime.
Similarly, the NYCN, in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Isah Abubakar, described the killing as a cowardly crime and an attack on scholarship, truth and the moral fabric of Northern Nigeria.
The council said it drew heavily on Masusuka’s teachings of the Holy Qur’an, describing him as a revered scholar, mentor, and source of spiritual guidance whose death was a significant loss to the region.
It called on the Federal Government and the Katsina State Government to conduct a full-scale, independent investigation into the killing and uncover any conspiracy surrounding the incident.
The NYCN also demanded the identification and prosecution of not only the gunmen but also the alleged masterminds, financiers and other accomplices, warning against allowing the case to become another unresolved killing.
“The era of empty promises, superficial condolence messages, and decorative investigative committees is over,” the council said, insisting that the authorities must demonstrate the political will to protect citizens and end impunity.
The council urged the authorities to ensure justice for the slain cleric, while praying that Almighty Allah grants him eternal rest.
Isah also stated that Northern youths would closely monitor the investigation.
