The Taraba State Government has warned political parties against recruiting and arming youths for political activities, saying violators of its anti-thuggery order will be arrested and prosecuted.
The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Sunday Ibrahim Maikarfi, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP in Jalingo.
Maikarfi said the order took immediate effect upon signing. That copies had been sent to relevant security agencies, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, for enforcement.
He emphasised that the order prohibits the use of weapons during political activities and the formation of unauthorised political security groups.
“Anybody who is caught in violation of this order can be arrested and investigated, then prosecuted,” he said.
The Solicitor-General said political parties must seek police approval for rallies and processions to ensure adequate security and prevent clashes.
He added that the order guarantees equal protection for registered political parties and duly nominated candidates, prohibiting public officers and government agencies from obstructing lawful political activities or denying access to public facilities on discriminatory grounds.
Maikarfi further said that the order applied to all political parties, irrespective of their status, and was not targeted at any individual or group.
He urged political actors to embrace peaceful campaigns and constructive criticism, warning that Taraba could not afford additional security challenges.
He said the government had begun publicising the order through media engagements and called for further public sensitisation to ensure compliance.
