At a time when Nigerian swimming is searching for its next breakout star, 15-year-old Aidan Dumuje-Abili is emerging as one of the country’s most exciting young talents, with hopes of making a major impact at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

A student of The Grange School, Lagos, Dumuje-Abili first attracted attention at the age of eight, when he was regarded as the fastest swimmer in his age category in Lagos, earning him the nickname ‘Bullet’.

By the age of 11, he had established himself as a dominant force in the Dolphin Swimming League. Since then, his progress has been marked by record-breaking performances and impressive results at national and international competitions.

His breakthrough on the international stage came at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championship in Accra, Ghana, where he won seven gold medals and one bronze, set five new Zone 2 records and was named Most Valuable Junior Athlete.

He also demonstrated his potential at the World School Games in Doha, winning gold in the 50-metre freestyle, while his performances at the National Youth Games and the senior National Sports Festival further strengthened his reputation as a swimmer to watch.

In recognition of his achievements and promise, the National Sports Commission rewarded him with ₦3 million.

Now, Dumuje-Abili is preparing for another major opportunity, having been shortlisted to represent Nigeria at the Youth Olympic Games, where he will seek to translate his growing reputation into a performance capable of putting him among the medals.

The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), Taiwo Orise, has expressed strong confidence in the teenager’s prospects, describing him as a natural talent whose commitment and determination set him apart.

Orise highlighted the challenges Dumuje-Abili faces in his development, particularly limited training facilities and inadequate opportunities to compete regularly, but said his progress despite those constraints was evidence of his exceptional ability.

The federation official also praised the youngster’s demanding routine, which involves swimming before and after school as he works towards his ambitions.

According to Orise, Dumuje-Abili began dreaming of competing at the Youth Olympic Games when he was just 12, and his subsequent selection represents an important milestone in that journey.

“If they ask me to pick one athlete who has the potential to give us a medal, I will pick him first,” Orise said, underlining the federation’s belief in the teenager’s ability to challenge his international counterparts.

His confidence is also rooted in the swimmer’s growing experience against strong opposition, including his bronze-medal finish behind two South African competitors at the Africa Youth Games.

For Dumuje-Abili, however, the Youth Olympic Games represent a step towards a much bigger ambition.

“My focus is on the Youth Olympics, and later, the Olympics,” he has said.

His immediate challenge is to turn his talent, preparation and international experience into a medal-winning performance in Dakar. Beyond the competition, his progress could also strengthen the case for greater investment in Nigerian swimming, where promising athletes continue to contend with inadequate facilities and limited competitive exposure.

At just 15, Dumuje-Abili has already built an impressive record. A strong performance in Dakar would further establish him as one of Nigeria’s leading young swimming prospects and provide fresh encouragement for the development of aquatics in the country.
