The House of Representatives, has urged the Federal Government to rename the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, after an elder statesman and former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma(Rtd).
The House, while adopting a motion jointly sponsored by three lawmakers – Hons Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni and Ayuba Zaku Dampar, said the university should now be known as T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW), subject to the necessary amendment of its enabling Act.
The Green Chamber also mandated its Committee on University Education to engage relevant stakeholders and facilitate the legislative measures required to give effect to the proposed renaming.
The motion was titled: ‘Call to Rename Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, as T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, Wukari.
Moving the motion on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Gaza noted that Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, was established in 2011 to expand access to higher education and promote research and national development.
Gaza argued that the contributions of Lieutenant General Danjuma (Rtd), to Nigeria through military and public service, philanthropy and support for education, healthcare, and vulnerable communities deserved such recognition.
He noted that naming the university after the former Chief of Army Staff would honour his contributions to national development and preserve a legacy of service for future generations. The motion was seconded by Hon. Bamidele Salam.
When the motion was put to a voice vote, the lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in its favour.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who presided over plenary, commended Hon. Gaza for bringing the motion, saying, “Hon. Jonathan, thank you for remembering our leader, our mentor. Your motion is apt. The federal government will do the needful. God bless you.”
The motion was consequently referred to the House Committee on University Education for further legislative action.
