The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Delta state council, has said the decision to institutionalize the payment of 13th-month salary to public servants in the state with legal backing demonstrated the government’s recognition of the contributions of workers to the growth and development of Delta state.
TUC chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, in a chat with LEADERSHIP described the initiative as a significant boost to workers’ welfare, particularly amid prevailing economic challenges that have continued to put pressure on the finances of workers and their families.
The TUC also urged the state government to sustain its engagement with labour unions and pursue policies capable of strengthening workers’ purchasing power, improving productivity and protecting their dignity.
According to the union, the title: “Ukodo the Pace Setter, ” reflects its appreciation of the governor’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare through policies that provide tangible benefits.
The TUC noted that workers who feel valued and adequately supported are more likely to remain motivated, productive and committed to their responsibilities.
It reaffirmed its willingness to work with the state government in promoting good governance, sustainable development and policies that improve the living conditions of workers and other residents.
The union, however, stressed that its relationship with the government would continue to be guided by constructive engagement, mutual respect and social dialogue.
It said organised labour would commend policies that advance workers’ interests while continuing to engage the government on issues requiring attention.
Addressing workers across the state, the union said the introduction of the 13th-month salary underscored the importance of sustained dialogue between government and organised labour in achieving beneficial outcomes.
It urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture by remaining dedicated to their duties and contributing to the effective delivery of public services.
Expressing appreciation to Oborevwori on behalf of its leadership and members, the TUC said the governor had taken a notable step towards improving the welfare of the Delta workforce.
He said TUC conferred the title of “Ukodo the Pace Setter” on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in recognition of his administration’s decision to institutionalize the payment of 13th-month salary to public servants in the state.
“Your Excellency, you have taken a bold step in workers’ welfare. You have set a pace. Ukodo the Pace Setter,” the statement said.
