The President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, has congratulated Nigerian professional golfer Godwin Okoko after he won his maiden professional title at the Rift Valley Championship in Kenya.
The 24-year-old clinched the title at Nakuru Golf Club on Tuesday, emerging champion of the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing.
Okoko produced an impressive performance in the final round, shooting five-under-par 68 to finish with a tournament total of 209.
Simon Njogu of Golf Park Golf Club finished second with a nine-under-par 210, while overnight leader Edwin Mudanyi settled for third place with a six-under-par 213.
Reacting to the victory, Runsewe described Okoko’s achievement as a significant milestone for Nigerian golf, saying it highlighted the country’s potential to produce professionals capable of competing successfully on the international stage.
“Okoko’s victory in Kenya is a proud moment for Nigerian golf and a testament to the talent, determination and hard work of our young professionals,” he said.
The NGF president expressed hope that the triumph would inspire other Nigerian golfers to pursue excellence and approach international competitions with greater confidence.
Runsewe also praised Okoko’s trainer, Pro Dominic, for his dedication and commitment to developing the golfer’s skills and preparing him for success at the professional level.
“Behind every successful athlete is a support system that provides guidance, discipline and encouragement.
“I commend Pro Dominic for investing his time and expertise in Okoko’s development,” he said.
The federation president further pledged that the NGF would reward Okoko upon his return to Nigeria in recognition of his achievement.
According to Runsewe, the gesture is intended to encourage the golfer to build on his breakthrough and motivate other Nigerian professionals to pursue similar success in international competitions.
Okoko’s triumph provides a boost for Nigerian golf, with the young professional demonstrating his ability to compete against established players on the East African circuit.
Runsewe reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting talented golfers, developing their careers and creating opportunities for them to represent Nigeria at international competitions.
The NGF president said sustained support for promising players would be crucial to raising the standard of Nigerian golf and strengthening the country’s presence on the international stage. (NAN)
