Ifeoma Nkiruka Chukwuogo may not yet be one of Nollywood’s most recognisable names, but her work has been quietly building a strong case for attention.
Born in Warri and raised in Port Harcourt, Chukwuogo studied Corporate Communication at the University of Texas at Austin before earning a master’s degree in Film and Media Production from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.
Her filmmaking journey has moved through short films, television and now feature cinema. She co-wrote and directed Bariga Sugar, the acclaimed short film about two children growing up around a Lagos brothel. She later directed Diiche, the Showmax psychological thriller, and worked on NdaniTV’s Rumour Has It.
Her biggest project yet is Phoenix Fury, her feature directorial debut, which she wrote, produced and directed. The revenge drama follows two women brought together by experiences of loss and injustice. It won Best Film at the 2024 Africa International Film Festival, while Chukwuogo took home Best Director.
Now, Phoenix Fury is moving from the festival circuit to a wider audience, with its Nigerian cinema release scheduled for October 30.
For Chukwuogo, it is another step in a career increasingly defined by complex characters, particularly women, and stories that refuse to take the easy route.
The October 30 cinema release is confirmed, with Nile Entertainment handling distribution.
