Tributes have poured in for British acting legend Sir Patrick Stewart following his death at 86, with longtime friend and colleague Sir Ian McKellen among those remembering his remarkable career and personal warmth.
McKellen, who starred alongside Stewart in the X-Men films, described him as one of the most respected and beloved actors of his generation. He recalled their decades-long friendship, saying Stewart was someone he could rely on, admire and love.
William Shatner, another Star Trek veteran, praised Stewart for bringing intelligence, grace and humanity to his performances, adding that his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard represented the best of humanity.
Hugh Jackman, who worked with Stewart on X-Men, also paid tribute, describing him as a tremendous friend and one of the greats of stage and screen.
Stewart became internationally recognised as Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, appearing in more than 170 episodes and four films before reprising the role in Star Trek: Picard.
He also earned widespread recognition as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Menfranchise, alongside an acclaimed career in classical theatre.
The actor died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday following a period with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
