The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr Jide Idris, has assured Nigerians that the country is fully equipped to manage the current Ebola situation following the identification of two suspected cases in the North-East region.
Idris gave the assurance in a statement posted on his Facebook handle, amid intensified surveillance efforts by the agency to prevent the possible spread of the disease.
He said the health and safety of Nigerians remained the agency’s highest priority, adding that rapid response teams had been deployed to manage the situation.
According to him, the two suspected cases have been isolated, while laboratory testing is being conducted to establish their Ebola status.
He disclosed that contact tracing was also progressing, with the agency tracking the recent movements of the suspected cases within the country to ensure that all potential contacts were identified and monitored.
Idris urged Nigerians to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information about the suspected cases.
He advised the public to strengthen basic hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, while urging anyone experiencing unusual symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at designated health facilities.
The NCDC boss said the agency would provide further updates once official laboratory results were confirmed.
