NASU Gives Yobe Govt 14-Day Ultimatum Over Staff Welfare

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Yobe State Council, has given the state government a 14-day ultimatum to address outstanding welfare demands affecting non-academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions.

The ultimatum, which took effect on October 29, 2026, followed a meeting of the union at its secretariat in Damaturu, where members expressed dissatisfaction with delays in implementing agreed conditions of service.

In a statement, the state chairman of NASU, Comrade Ali Usman, said the union was demanding the implementation of the 65-year retirement age, the reviewed 2024 salary scale under the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA) and applicable Earned Allowance (EA) for non-academic staff.

The union expressed concern that the state government had approved the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for academic staff, while similar demands submitted on behalf of non-academic workers through the Joint Academic and Non-Academic Staff Union (JANASU) remained unaddressed.

NASU stressed that non-academic staff play critical roles in administration, technical operations and the daily management of tertiary institutions, arguing that their welfare deserved equal consideration.

It warned that continued delays in meeting the demands could weaken workers’ morale and threaten industrial harmony in the affected institutions.

The union urged the government to take concrete steps to resolve the outstanding issues before the ultimatum expires on November 11, 2026.

It said its members would reconvene on November 12 to review the government’s response and decide on the next course of action in accordance with relevant labour laws and established procedures.

NASU, however, reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the state government, emphasising that its demands were intended to promote fairness and improve working conditions rather than provoke confrontation.
