African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has released a newly recovered video allegedly showing individuals suspected of attacking him and members of his team during the Ikogosi Marathon in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, while alleging that CCTV recordings of the incident were erased after police officers removed the surveillance equipment.
Sowore, in a statement dated November 2, 2026, described the video as a significant development in the investigation into the October 30 attack, which occurred at Tawakalitu Restaurant in Ado-Ekiti.
He said the footage showed the faces of individuals suspected of participating in the assault, providing what he described as crucial leads for identifying those responsible.
The AAC presidential candidate, however, raised concerns over the handling of potential evidence, alleging that recordings from the restaurant’s CCTV system had been completely erased after the equipment was taken away by police officers.
According to the statement, Sowore contacted the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, the Divisional Police Officer of Ado-Ekiti Central Police Station, Mustapha Mohammed, and the Rapid Response Squad commander on November 1 to demand updates on the investigation.
He alleged that the officers claimed there was “no complainant” because he had not submitted a written statement, despite the reported involvement of police officers in rescuing the victims, taking them to hospital, arresting suspects and recovering weapons, stolen phones and other devices.
Sowore expressed surprise at the response, questioning why the investigation appeared to be stalled despite the reported police intervention following the attack.
He further alleged that some stolen phones had been electronically traced to the Ekiti State Governor’s Lodge.
According to him, when he questioned the officers about the phones and the CCTV equipment removed from Tawakalitu Restaurant, they denied knowledge of the matters and abruptly ended their conversations.
The statement said the restaurant management later confirmed that a Divisional Police Officer had returned the CCTV equipment, but the recordings had been erased.
It added that the management declined to disclose the identity of the officer who returned the equipment.
Sowore raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged disappearance of the recordings and the handling of other evidence linked to the attack.
“Who ordered the removal of the CCTV equipment? Who erased the recordings? Why are senior police officers denying knowledge of critical evidence? And why are investigators claiming there is no complainant in a violent crime witnessed and investigated by the police themselves?” he asked.
He described the developments as raising serious concerns about possible evidence tampering, obstruction of justice and attempts to shield those responsible for the attack.
Sowore called for the immediate establishment of an independent investigative team to examine the assault and the alleged erasure of the CCTV footage.
He also demanded a forensic examination of the surveillance equipment and the identification of police officers who handled it.
The AAC presidential candidate further called for the arrest and prosecution of anyone found responsible for the attack or the deliberate destruction of evidence.
He insisted that the newly recovered video should be independently examined and anyone identifiable in the footage properly investigated.
“The perpetrators must not be allowed to escape accountability through the destruction of evidence or manipulation of police investigations,” he said.
The October 30 incident occurred while Sowore and members of his entourage were in Ekiti State to participate in the Ikogosi Marathon.
Sowore maintained that an independent investigation, a forensic examination of the CCTV equipment and proper scrutiny of the recovered video were necessary to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
