DataPro Limited has said, a credit rating provides an additional layer of independent assessment that complements a company’s stock exchange listing and helps investors understand its financial strength and risk profile.
In a report titled “Stock Exchange Listing: Does Credit Rating Matter?”, the rating Agency noted that while a company can list its shares without a credit rating, both instruments serve distinct but complementary purposes in the capital market.
DataPro explained that investors buying shares are not just acquiring stocks but buying into a business, its strategy, financial performance and future risks.
“Listing and credit rating can provide investors with different but complementary perspectives on the same company. While an equity investment gives investors an ownership interest, a credit rating provides an independent assessment of the company’s ability to meet its financial obligations,” the Agency stated.
According to DataPro, beyond historical financial performance, equity investors also consider a company’s business model, competitive position, strategy, governance, cash flows and financial risks.
It said a credit rating focuses specifically on credit risk, assessing the company’s capacity and willingness to meet its financial commitments, thereby offering an independent view that complements market information.
The Agency clarified that a credit rating is not an investment recommendation nor a substitute for valuation analysis, but a tool for understanding an issuer’s creditworthiness.
DataPro added that the rating becomes particularly relevant when a listed company seeks debt financing through bonds or commercial paper.
In Nigeria, it noted, corporate bonds are required to be rated by a rating agency registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), making the rating an important independent input for debt investors.
“Equity investors may be focused on growth, earnings and potential returns, while debt investors are primarily concerned with the issuer’s ability to meet its obligations. These are different considerations, but they relate to the same underlying business,” DataPro said.
It added that listing gives a company access to equity investors, while a credit rating provides an independent perspective on its financial obligations, and together they enrich the information available to the market.
