The National Sports Commission (NSC) has secured a commitment from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to provide technical support, funding and coaching expertise to accelerate the development of indoor and beach volleyball in Nigeria.
The agreement followed a meeting between the two bodies in Dakar, Senegal, where they discussed strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s volleyball structure, from grassroots development and talent identification to elite performance and international competitiveness.
The proposed partnership will also focus on coaching education, refereeing standards, competition structures and improving the quality of domestic volleyball leagues.
Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described the meeting as productive, expressing satisfaction with the FIVB’s commitment to supporting the development of the sport in Nigeria.
“The meeting is quite productive. What a fruitful deliberation with the International Volleyball Federation. It gladdens my heart to know that international volleyball has seen Nigeria as one of the greatest in the game.
“They have offered technical support, funding, coaching and other resources that can aid the development of volleyball in Nigeria,” Olopade said.
He noted that the support would help Nigeria build on its growing presence in international volleyball, particularly following the country’s historic qualification for the Olympic Games in beach volleyball.
“Recall that Nigeria has qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles and, with this, we will keep discovering talent. We will not relent in our efforts,” he added.
Olopade assured the international federation that the NSC would maintain a transparent and sustainable partnership, stressing the Commission’s commitment to providing the institutional support and enabling environment required to translate the agreement into tangible results.
He also identified volleyball as one of the strategic sports capable of creating employment opportunities, engaging young people, promoting national unity and improving Nigeria’s image internationally.
The meeting was attended by Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engineer Habu Gumel; its Secretary-General, Tunde Popoola; and the President of the FIVB.
The FIVB also reaffirmed its readiness to work with the NSC and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) to implement development programmes aimed at raising technical standards, strengthening domestic competitions and preparing Nigerian teams for continental and global championships.
The partnership is expected to provide opportunities for improved training methods, coaching development, grassroots participation and better preparation of Nigerian athletes for major international competitions.
For Nigerian volleyball, the proposed collaboration represents an opportunity to consolidate the progress made in beach volleyball while addressing structural challenges affecting the development of both the indoor and beach versions of the sport.
The NSC said the initiative forms part of its broader strategy to use international partnerships to strengthen sports development and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness across different sporting disciplines.
