The Nigeria Police Force has discovered a newborn baby abandoned in a nylon wrapper in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
The baby, who was reportedly found in a badly injured condition, was rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and is currently receiving medical attention under the care of the police authority.
The FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, who confirmed the incident, said the circumstances of the baby’s abandonment were disturbing, particularly as the child was allegedly wrapped in nylon and left helpless.
The command’s spokesperson, in an appeal to the public following a viral video, called for information to help identify the mother or anyone with knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
She urged residents to be observant and report any woman in their neighbourhood or community who had recently been pregnant but was suddenly seen without a baby.
The appeal, according to the police, is aimed at establishing how the newborn sustained the injuries, identifying those responsible for the abandonment and ensuring that appropriate action is taken.
The police spokesperson also appealed to pregnant women not to abandon their babies after giving birth; rather, they should make arrangements for proper adoption if they can’t take care of the baby or if they are not ready for motherhood.
The police urged anyone with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward and report to the Bwari police station or contact the FCT Police Command.
The command assured that the information provided would assist in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incident.
