A developer programme in Lagos has highlighted a growing business priority: turning AI training into engineering capability that organisations can use to deliver real solutions.

Andela, an enterprise AI adoption and delivery partner, worked with OpenAI and Miva Open University to bring together 200 developers and engineers for Codex in Action: Engineering the Future of Learning with AI, powered by OpenAI Academy.

The event, held on October 28 in Lagos on the sidelines of TechCabal’s Moonshot 2026, showcased AI-powered solutions designed to address practical challenges in education and lifelong learning.

Andela said the programme brought together 100 Miva developers and 100 senior Andela engineers. It said the initiative connected applied learning with hands-on engineering to help participants move from AI proficiency to practical problem-solving.

The company said the showcase concluded a three-week agentic development journey. It said the 100 Miva developers were selected from more than 1,000 applicants, trained in OpenAI Codex, and then worked with senior Andela engineers to build solutions addressing specific learning needs.

Andela said the programme reflected a broader shift in AI adoption, with organisations increasingly seeking to determine whether investment in AI skills could produce measurable operational value.

Andela said the broader Codex learning initiative recorded measurable progress in agentic engineering proficiency. It said that, after two weeks of applied learning, 200 senior developers improved their assessed proficiency by 36 percentage points over their baseline.

The company said the result was significant because AI was reshaping the skills engineers needed. It said its Emerging Skills Research, which analysed 47,101 Fortune 500 technical job postings, found that new combinations of engineering capabilities were emerging faster than traditional job titles could keep up.

Andela said the research identified growing demand for capabilities such as agent orchestration and LLM evaluation and serving among postings associated with OpenAI technologies. It said those findings reinforced the importance of developing practical AI engineering proficiency alongside the experience required to design, build and deliver complex AI-powered systems.

Reported project outcomes

Andela said the projects presented in Lagos showed what became possible when developers moved beyond learning AI tools and applied them to real challenges.

It said the first-place project was Coteacher, a working prototype developed by Miva student Esih Egwurube. According to Andela, the platform gave students a second chance at classroom lessons by turning a single teacher recording into personalised versions based on each learner’s needs and learning history.

The company said that, with teacher approval, students could download lessons for offline access, receive alternative explanations or activities when they were stuck, and pick up where they left off. It added that, when online, students could access an OpenAI-powered voice tutor, with progress synced back to the teacher.

Egwurube was quoted as saying that the Codex training had changed his entire workflow. He said the experience had allowed him to tackle meaningful challenges and translate his knowledge into real-world solutions that created measurable impact.

Reported business perspective

Kate Woska, Vice President, Africa, Middle East & Impact Partnerships at Andela, was quoted as saying that the initiative showed what effective AI adoption looked like. She said developers built proficiency through applied learning and then put those capabilities to work on real problems.

She said that, by combining OpenAI Codex with the experience and guidance of Andela’s senior engineers, the programme helped developers move beyond experimentation to build tangible solutions. She added that this reflected the same connection between AI adoption and delivery that Andela helped enterprises make.

Andela said the initiative came as AI reshaped the skills engineers needed. It said its approach combined assessment-led learning, applied engineering experience and hands-on solution development to help developers translate AI capabilities into meaningful outcomes.

Andela said Lagos marked the second chapter of the pan-African Codex Champions Series, following the inaugural edition in Nairobi, Kenya.

It said the initiative would continue in Cape Town, South Africa, on November 15, with a further gathering planned alongside the OpenAI Forum. The company said the engagements aimed to strengthen AI engineering capabilities across Africa.

Andela described itself as an AI adoption and delivery partner for global enterprises. It said it helped organisations realise measurable value from AI investments by assessing teams’ agentic engineering proficiency and developing the skills, judgment and practices engineers needed to work effectively with AI.

The company also said it designed, built and deployed enterprise-ready AI systems, along with the technology and data foundations required to scale them securely and cost-effectively. It said its work spanned leading AI development platforms, including Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex.
