The battle over the authentic senatorial candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Imo West Senatorial District has entered a decisive phase, following the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision to reserve December 23, 2026, for judgment in the disputed party primary election.

Hon. Uche Ben Odunzeh, who is challenging the illegal substitution of his name as the NDC senatorial candidate in favour of Eze Leonard Chukwudi Mayor, who was substituted in place of him, has expressed confidence that the court will ultimately uphold justice and affirm his claim to the party’s ticket, according to INEC reports

Odunzeh had approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking judicial intervention over the unlawful substitution of his name, insisting that he is the legitimate and authentic senatorial candidate of the NDC for Imo West.

At the latest proceedings, the court adopted the motions and processes filed by all parties, bringing the matter to the stage of final judicial determination. The court subsequently fixed December 23, 2026, for judgment.

Reacting to the development, Odunzeh expressed optimism about the outcome, maintaining that the evidence and legal arguments presented before the court would vindicate his position.

He reiterated his confidence in the judiciary, describing it as the last hope of the commoner, and expressed the belief that the eventual judgment would restore his candidacy and give effect to what he considers the authentic outcome of the party primary.

According to him, the NDC needs a credible and widely acceptable candidate capable of winning the Imo West senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, and he insists that he remains the right person for the task.

The legal dispute has continued to attract political attention within the NDC and across Imo West, as the question of who will ultimately represent the party in the forthcoming senatorial election remains unresolved.

With all parties having presented their respective positions, December 23, 2026, now stands as a defining date in the political contest between Hon. Uche Ben Odunzeh and Eze Leonard Chukwudi Mayor.

For Odunzeh, the expectation remains clear: that justice will prevail, and his claim to the NDC senatorial ticket will be upheld.
