The Kogi State Police Command has clarified that a viral video circulating on social media with the caption “Police Don Buy Soja Job” relates to an incident during the 2023 governorship election in the state and not a recent development.
The Command said the footage had been recycled without proper historical context, creating a misleading impression of a fresh confrontation between police officers and military personnel.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the incident involved police officers attached to the then Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Ahmed.
According to the statement, the officers had accompanied the former Deputy Speaker to his hometown, Abache, to exercise his franchise during the 2023 governorship election when they were apprehended by military personnel deployed for election duties.
The officers were reportedly arrested in connection with enforcing the movement restriction imposed during the election.
The statement added that the officers were subsequently taken into custody and that the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The Command said it considered the clarification necessary to address the misleading narrative being created by the circulation of the old footage without its historical background.
It stressed that the Police Command currently enjoys a high level of synergy, mutual respect and operational cooperation with the military and other sister security agencies in the state.
According to the PPRO, the partnership remains critical to ongoing joint security operations and the collective efforts to maintain peace and protect lives and property across Kogi State.
The Command warned that recycling outdated footage in a way that could create distrust or portray discord among security agencies was counterproductive and could undermine the cooperation painstakingly built over time.
It therefore urged members of the public and social media users to verify the authenticity and context of information before sharing. It warned against using outdated materials to mislead the public or promote propaganda.
The Kogi State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and sustained collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure the safety and security of residents.
