Nigerian Fathers Now Value Presence Over Provision, Research Shows

Modern Nigerian men increasingly view their duty not as transactional providers but as emotionally present, hands-on caregivers from infancy through early childhood, research has shown.

According to findings released by Gatefield’s Opinion Lab in their new qualitative study, The New Breadwinner: Masculinity, Caregiving and Economic Prosperity in Nigeria, Nigerian men prioritise emotional presence as their top priority in fatherhood.

Emotional connection was cited nearly twice over traditional financial provision (156 mentions versus 84 mentions).

Despite their desire for presence, men face “provider shame” during economic downturns, and structural barriers that penalise caregiving.

The study further revealed that confrontational, rights-focused messaging tends to push potential male advocates away, whereas presenting shared caregiving as a win for the entire family fosters broader buy-in.

Consequently, current public advocacy strategies and policy frameworks remain outdated, inadvertently pushing away men who are otherwise ready to take on active caregiving roles at home.

The research indicated that emotional involvement in fatherhood is now the foremost priority for modern men, outpacing sole financial breadwinning by almost double.

The study’s message testing revealed that ideological demands or statements like “dismantling the motherhood penalty,” “unpaid care work,” generated a sixfold increase in defensiveness.

“Conversely, framing shared caregiving around “household peace and prosperity” proved nearly five times more persuasive, increasing message resonance by over 70%.

“When framed as building a stronger family, men actively embrace the narrative.

When men internalise their identity to strictly financial output, economic instability triggers profound shame and emotional withdrawal,” the report stated

It also showed that while public sector employees receive 14 days of paid paternity leave, the 80% of Nigerians in the informal workforce face direct financial penalties when taking time off to care for children.

“Family-centric messaging produced seven supportive responses for every single instance of resistance. Focusing on shared family benefits built high alignment and practically eliminated audience pushback.

“Dual-income, middle-class families often manage the demand for shared caregiving by outsourcing domestic chores to hired help, highlighting a systemic class divide for low-income families without support networks,” the findings indicated.

The report emphasised the role of faith and cultural gatekeepers in normalising active fatherhood.

The study among others called for shift of public advocacy away from polarising language and focus on child developmental outcomes, household peace, and shared economic resilience.

It also recommended expansion of paid paternity leave beyond the 14-day public benchmark to the private sector and establishment of community childcare for informal workers.

The research further suggested formation of “strategic alliances with religious and traditional gatekeepers to preach sermon series centered on mutual submission, financial transparency, and sacrificial, tenderhearted marital partnership.

“Development of accessible community-level interventions and informal crèche networks tailored for the working-class and informal sector, recognising that domestic outsourcing is inaccessible to low-income families.”
