The Chief for the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abas, has charged commanders to remain unyielding in their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters, combating maritime criminality and protecting the nation’s wealth.
He stated this in his closing remarks at the Chief of the Naval Staff Annual Retreat for 2026 themed, “Appraisal of the Nigerian Navy Commands for Enhanced Operational Effectiveness.”
He said the retreat provided an opportunity for deep introspection particularly, to identify unique opportunities to improve operations, enhance responsiveness, optimise fleet renewal efforts, strengthen surveillance capabilities and expand logistical frameworks.
The Naval Chief said with the quality of the strategies proffered during deliberations, he is confident that the objectives of the retreat have been achieved.
“Let me however be quick to point out that the true end state of this retreat does not lie in the brilliant ideas discussed or the strategies that were proffered.
“The ultimate measure of the outcome of this forum will be the deliberate implementation of the various decisions taken here, in our respective commands.
“I therefore charge all commanders present here to return to your respective Areas of Responsibility with renewed vigour, sense of purpose and strategic clarity to translate the resolutions of this retreat into tangible operational outcomes.
“We must remain unyielding in our commitment to securing our territorial waters, combating maritime criminality and protecting the economic prosperity of our dear nation.
“On my part, I remain dedicated to addressing your logistics, operational and administrative challenges within the ambit of available resources. We will continue to prioritise your needs to ensure you have the realistic manpower, equipment and motivation to effectively dominate your areas of responsibility,” he said.
He appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his resolute support, which he said has continued to sustain Navy fleet.
